Back in April, I dedicated an entire Running With Heels column to one of my new favorite designers, Melissa Serpico for SERPICO. And this week, I had the pleasure of attending an editor's lunch at the lovely Bryant Park Grill to see the Spring/Summer '09 SERPICO collection. And I LOVED it. Every piece. Really, Melissa has outdone herself and seriously expanded her line...there were intricate dresses, unexpected details, exceptionally tailored pants and shorts, supple leather trenchcoats. SERPICO has even created a line of necklaces that are serious statement-makers.
When I chatted with Melissa at the luncheon, she told me that one of her biggest inspirations for this collection was Alfred Hitchcock movies...the drama, the intrigue...which is exactly what you will find with each of her new pieces. There are fabrics like silk taffeta, coated linen, and the softest leather, in colors like teal, crimson, black, white, silver, kelly green, navy and rich mauve. The dresses have well-edited details like a slashed cut-out across the back and lapels in the back instead of the front (that look fashion-forward, not out-of-place!). The pants and shorts are tailored so beautifully that anybody could wear them. And each jacket, trench, and top has little details proving exactly why SERPICO is really one to watch...three-dimensional stitching, architecturally uneven hem lines, and amazingly color-saturated fabrics.
Totally new to SERPICO is a collection of massive necklaces that are somehow completely weightless. Made from tiny strips of leather, silk taffeta, or beadwork woven into structural circles, they come in a variety of sizes and designs, and each one creates more impact than the last. Available with gold or silver links, they all exactly compliment the clothing line without at all giving it too much competition.
Well done, Melissa...I think I'm more of fan now than ever before!
