This past Thursday, I attended the Project Earth Day Fashion Show. Part student design competition, part professional designer show, part Earth Day celebration, and part eco-awareness event, Project Earth Day put on a great party. VIP's walked the green carpet, guests drank organic beer and acai cocktails, and we got to see some fantastic fashion, all created from sustainable materials.
With our own little party in the front row, guest judge Kevin Christiana and I were joined by NY Giants linebacker Danny Clark, Danny's manager, and my husband. Held at the Openhouse Gallery on Mulberry Street in Nolita (one of my new favorite event spaces), the student competition was won by Stacy Longo from FIT, and the entire professional show was curated by eco-designer and stylist Bahar Shahpar (who also showed her work on the runway). Other pro designers included Alkemie, Bodkin, Covet, Larsen Grey, and Sublet, among others. Fellow FIT students of Ms. Longo's as well as students at Parsons and Connecticut College also participated in the competition, and all deserve accolades for the work they are doing.
I have to admit, at least from a fashion point-of-view, I'm not very "green." But there were some beautiful dresses that came down the runway...all made from sustainable materials, and all really lovely. When you see good design that also does good for our planet, it's easy to understand its importance. And the fact that Project Earth Day is encouraging designers while they are still in school is excellent in itself, and I hope some of them will be the next "big thing" - all while doing "big things" for the earth...!
