All arond the world, for years upon years, guests have tossed rice at newleyweds in celebration and to bring them blessings, good fortune and prosperity. The history and meaning of using rice or grain dates back to the ancient Hebrew, Assyrian, and Egyptian societies where the throwing of food items over the newlyweds was symbolic of fertility. I am a huge fan of EATING rice (gluten free diet staple!) but I am not a huge fan of THROWING rice at weddings because honestly, it is only fun for the guests. The bride and groom have to duck as they get pelted with small hard little rice grains. Not fun! Bubbles are OK, but kind of an anticlimactic finish. Some people have recently started to throw birdseed due to an urban myth that the uncooked rice would be eaten by birds, expand in their stomachs, and hurt the animals (not true!....but regardless, bird seed isn't my favorite choice of a celebration item..it can still make you want to duck!)
But I do love the idea of keeping to throwing something MADE of rice, which is why I love Rice Butterflies, a genious Slovenian company that has created their product entirely from rice paper, rice grain, and rice glue. So it keeps in the tradition of prosperity, fertility and good luck for the couple, but the end result is a soft, fluttery celebration of color surrounding the newleyweds. The pictures that come from Rice Butterflies are amazing! Colors available are white/natural, red, pink, lavender, green, blue, and yellow.
