Spring-time layering can be tough. You need to find a happy medium between looking like you are back in Fall and freezing your tush off because the layers aren't actually enough to keep you warm in 55-degree weather. Add to that the fact that layering in general can be a struggle (which layers to keep what length, how many different colors and textures are ok to mix, etc), and you can easily have a fashion emergency every morning instead of actually enjoying the new season!
Vests, especially vests that can do double-duty as both a layered piece of your outfit and as outerwear, are one of my very favorite ways to perfect a really good layered look. The right vests work on almost any body type and can instantly transform a sort of blah outfit into something really cool and chic. You can use a vest to create a waist, up your rocker-chic status, and change the vibe of a look from 2015 to a fabulous modern version of 1975. I have multiple fur ones (both real and faux) that are the ideal weight for Spring because I can layer them over a long-sleeved chiffon top when it is in the 50-60-degree range and never be too hot or too cold.
So what about when it's a little warmer than that but you aren't quite ready for a full-on summery ensemble? Try this amazing number from LaMarque. In soft, lightweight, pale taupe kidskin suede, it is the ideal piece for this time of year. April and May are the months when the weather is changing but you honestly look pretty ridiculous busting out a sundress and sandals. Instead, this vest with its long fringe detail will move you seamlessly through the season...and make you look incredibly boho-chic in the process. Wear it with (as shown) a white wife-beater tank underneath and either ultra-skinny jeans or very fitted ones with a oversized flared cuffs. Either way, because of the long length of the vest, make sure you wear the highest heels you can manage (platforms are an excellent match for this as well as an excellent way to cheat on wearing higher heels!) so that you don't end up looking shorter.
Now to go get dressed. For some reason, I'm thinking maybe I should wear a vest today...;)
