Hmmm. What to say about the William Rast Fall/Winter '09 show. It's a tricky one because for me, it wasn't really about fashion. It was a little bit about 5,000 women hoping for a glance of Justin Timberlake (we got it...for one second at the end of the show...). And it was a little bit about the 100 or so bold-faced names in the front row, many of them known friends of JT. And the fashion itself...well, there was denim. And some leather. And some wool. And some more denim. Oh, and some more denim after that.
So while I have actually been quite a fan of both William Rast's denim and other pieces for the past few seasons (specifically, there have been some really gorgeous jackets and amazingly well-fitting, modern and sexy jeans), this collection was...well...a little sad looking. The denim was, for the most part, a sort of non-color...faded and worn-looking, with unflattering waist- and hemlines. There were jeans, jean jackets, jean skirts, studded jean jackets, studded jeans...you get the picture. Both the womenswear and the menswear seemed a little grung-y/androgynous, and even the wool overcoats and leather jackets could have been worn by both men and women as well.
With a color palette of faded denim, black, grey, white, cream, and a hint of red here and there, the only other details were some patchwork and fringe. I will say there were a couple of standout looks...a fabulous charcoal wool cape with beading over one shoulder, a sharp black jacket for women with an oversized peplum, and a cool, modernized tuxedo jacket for the guys paired with a black & grey plaid shirt and um, well, jeans...
With a few glimmers of hope, I am wishfully thinking the William Rast that is really about fashion will be back next season. In the meantime...faded denim, anyone?
